MARTIN “MARTY” KRUGMAN
Martin “Marty” Krugman (1930s–January 1979) was a New York businessman, bookmaker, and associate of the Lucchese crime family who served as the real-life inspiration for the character Morrie Kessler in the film Goodfellas. He owned a popular male hair salon and wig shop called For Men Only in Queens, which also operated as a front for his illegal sports betting operation.
Role in the Lufthansa Heist: Krugman was a crucial informant who tipped off Henry Hill about the impending theft of cash and jewels from the Lufthansa cargo terminal at JFK Airport.
Downfall: Following the December 1978 heist, Krugman was murdered by Jimmy Burke’s crew in early January 1979 because he was too pushy in demanding his $500,000 share of the loot, raising Burke’s paranoia that he would become an FBI informant.
Fate: He disappeared on January 6, 1979, and it is believed his body was dismembered and buried, as his remains were never found. His wife sold the business shortly after his disappearance.
Casino follows Sam “Ace” Rothstein (De Niro), a Jewish American gambling expert handicapper who is asked by the Chicago Outfit to oversee the day-to-day casino and hotel operations at the Tangiers Casino in Las Vegas.
Other significant characters include Nicky Santoro (Pesci), a “made man” and childhood friend of Ace, and Ginger McKenna (Stone), a streetwise chip hustler whom Ace marries, and with whom he has a daughter.
